When I sold All Your Twisted Secrets to my first publisher, I was elated. Finally, after years of trying to get a book published, my dreams were coming true! So what did I do to celebrate?
I played a video game.
*Sigh* I’m deeply predictable, aren’t I?
Anyway. During the summer of 2018, I created Sims characters for the cast of the book, as well as the room they’re trapped in for an hour as they must make an impossible choice: choose one of them to kill, or else they’ll all die.
I planned to share these screenshots during the book’s launch week, along with other fun posts I had prepared. But the book launched March 2020—literally the first week of shelter-in-place in the US—and it seemed inappropriate to do any book promo beyond “uh my debut novel is out now… hope everyone stays healthy.”
Weeks passed. Then months. Then years. And I forgot all about it.
This week while organizing my hard drive, I found it all. It was like sifting through a memory box. Since this Sims install got wiped from my old laptop, all I have left are these screenshots… but they’re so precious! I love them! And now I simply must share them. Keep in mind that I created these before I ever saw a mockup of the cover, so these representations are different from those illustrations; if anything, they’re actually closer to how I originally pictured them! I hope these are fun to see.
(The image at the top of this post is from the week before launch using… Zoom? Some equivalent, since Zoom hadn’t popped off yet? I don’t remember! Either way… aw, how blissfully unaware I was that the world was about to shut down. How happy. How naive.)
